I love you Annette Gomez. I love your spirit and your commitment to our country, every last one of us.
This project has been a long time coming. Annette and I have been brainstorming about some sort of community project for months. It’s been a painful chaotic time for our industry and I’m thrilled that we were all able to channel our creative energy into something beautiful and inspiring.
Although we chatted a lot over the last four months, this project was birthed by Annette. She led the charge. This is her vision and I’m wildly grateful to be a part of it.
Everyone has specific talents of spaces inside them that they create from. I feel like I make the most impact when I speak in photographs. It’s when I feel the most clarity in my voice as a storyteller. I’ve been searching for away to encourage people to care and to vote with their hearts for so long. I have an optimistic view point. I think that if everyone cared and cast their hopes into a pot then we would all be better off. I guess I’m patriotic in that way. I hold a deep belief that at the end of the day we are all “for each other”. And if enough of us use our voices we can make real lasting change.
A natural way for me to say VOTE is with a group of my peers using their gifts to express what matters to them in a community project.
I love marching and protesting and holding space for equal rights and I also am equally enamored with creative something visual that is beautiful as a part of a team. There’s a parallel between many peoples voices chanting the same thing “Say her name” and many people wearing their hearts on their sleeves and laying down flowers and pinecones to say “vote”.
There’s also something subversive about making the call to action with flowers and ribbons. It’s soft and poetic and asks for a revolution. I think for artists our strengths can sometimes be found in the softest most ephemeral materials.
To these ladies, who sweated and created in masks while socially distancing and asking for change in our world - I adore you and I’m grateful for you. I love that my tribe of beauties and I love that I had the opportunity to document this project and celebrate them as creatives.
I hope that you enjoyed this coming together. I hope you spread the word and create your own project.
Let’s vote friends.
Let’s change the world. #thevoterscreative
